There weren’t many surprises at last night’s Oscars, unless you were Ryan Seacrest and The Dictator spilt some ashes over you!
Billy Crystal was back hosting for a 9th time (Bob Hope holds the record at 18 times!) and in true Crystal form he ‘popped up’ in some of the nominated films, which had him kissing George Clooney and meeting Justin Bieber. Crystal also sang a song about some of the nominees (Jonah Hill looked none too pleased with his reference. Sure, I don’t blame him, enough with the weight jokes already!)
The Artist continued it’s Award season run by picking up 5 awards, including Best Actor for Jean Dujardin (making him the first French actor to ever win an Oscar), Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius and Best Film (the first silent film to win this since Wings in 1927).
Octavia Spencer (The Help) and Christopher Plummer (Beginners - making him the oldest actor ever to win an Oscar) continued their award season dominance, by collecting the Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor awards. They also had some of my favourite moments/speeches of the night.
Meryl Streep won Best Actress for her role in Iron Lady. It may feel like she has won this a load of times but this is only her 3rd Oscar after 17 nominations!
The Muppets may not have been allowed to sing at the Oscars but Brett McKenzie took home an Oscar for Best Original Song for his song “Man or Muppet”
The Australians and Irish were also winners on the night with Australian Kirk Baxter winning for Best Editing, and Irish man Terry George and his team winning for Best Live Action Short for The Shore.

So that brings us to the end of Awards Season. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was a little happy about that. It has felt like Award Show overload this year.
I hope that this time next year we will be celebrating more creativity, innovation, exploration, escapism, advocacy, and fun at the cinema!
