33 years after Ridley Scott scared, intrigued and excited the world with Alien, he is back with Prometheus.
Set in 2093 (about 30 years before Alien), Dr Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and her partner, Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) have found evidence which leads them to believe that their makers are on another planet. Backed by billionaire Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), and with a team of misfits, led by Captain Janek (Idris Elba) they board the space craft, manned by icy company woman Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron) and android David (Michael Fassbender), to investigate what’s out there and to get their answers. Will the risk be worth it?
Fans of Alien, were so excited to hear that Scott was going back to this world and have been counting down the days to the release of Prometheus. Does it live up to expectations? It’s fair to say fans will not be disappointed. Prometheus has everything you could wish for – nods to Alien, jumps, and looks great.
While the story is strong, and there are many jumps, there are also predictable elements (it’s not a spoiler to say you know there are going to be some kick ass aliens killing some innocent, lovable humans), and there is one aspect of the story that goes so over the top that you can’t help but laugh (I don’t think that was the intended emotion).
You can overlook the predictable and sometimes ridiculous elements of the story as the execution of it by Ridley Scott is superb. He moves it along at a good pace and it looks spectacular. Scott went out of his way to have as many of the sets built as possible, as he wanted to have as much ‘reality’ as possible, he didn’t want to solely rely on CGI.
Scott is not unfamiliar with strong female characters having introduced the world to the heroin that is Ripley in Alien. He introduces us to a new one in Dr Shaw. Fans will be asking does Rapace’s Dr Elizabeth Shaw match Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley? Rapace summed it up perfectly in a recent interview, “She goes through a lot of things in the movie and she transforms. In the beginning she is full of hope and a true believer. And then things happen and she becomes a survivor and a fighter and a warrior.”
There is an outstanding cast supprting Rapace including Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, a hardly recognisable Guy Pearce, and Michael Fassbender. Fassbender is a stand out with his character of David, the android. He plays the man with no soul so effortlessly, the audience is constantly trying to figure out whether he is a good or bad guy.
Non sci-fi fans will enjoy Prometheus but the people who will really appreciate and love this are the fans. They will all be thrilled that Scott is back and, they will be hoping that this is not the last we see of him in this genre. Could this be the start of a new franchise?
