On Tuesday, the Spice Girls reunited to launch Viva Forever, the new West End musical, based on their music.
The launch took place at the St Pancreas Hotel – the hotel where the video clip for Wanna Be was filmed.
Written by Jennifer Saunders (of Ab Fab fame), it is the story of 4 girls in a band who enter a TV talent show and get through a few rounds, but, on the last round Viva, who lives with her mum on a houseboat, gets chosen over the other girls.
This is the first time Saunders has written a West End musical. She said about the experience, “It’s quite daunting actually because it’s so different from anything I’ve ever done before!” and of the songs she says, “I haven’t got bored of listening to any single song!”
Director Paul Garrington summed up the essence of the show, “Fundamentally it’s about 1 girl and the strenghth of her friendship, It’s also about a mother who is learning, after 20 years, how to be a mother and about the world of celebrity, the world of famous people with a woman who many people believe she is past her sell by date though a man of the same age certainly wouldn’t be judged in that way.”
Talking about the Spice Girls music, Victoria Beckham said, “We wrote about things we really believed in, girl power, empowering women, about having fun”
The Spice Girls are thrilled to have their songs turned into a musical, Emma Bunton said, “We’re all just so excited by it, for us, having our songs in a musical is just a dream come true!”
And the last word, as always goes to Geri Halliwell, ”It’s a great year for Britain. We have the jubilee, the Olympics and the Spice Girls Musical – woo hoo!”
