Adam (Pettyfer) is down on his luck, applying for jobs he has no qualifications for and sleeping on his sister’s couch to get by. A chance encounter with Mike (Tatum) changes everything. Mike introduces Adam to the world of male stripping. It’s filled with girls, big night’s out and more importantly cash, and lots of it! But both Adam ‘The Kid’ (stage name) and ‘Magic’ Mike are about to find out that all the glamour and partying can’t go on forever – can it?
While the good looking guys may be what is enticing people to fill those cinemas, there is more to this film than looks. It is not as cheesy as a stripping show. There is definitely substance. Soderberg gives us a glimpse into the not always glamourous world of the make stripper/male exotic dancer. Yes they have females throwing themselves at them (many a man’s dream come true) but all that can come at a price! Steven Soderbergh dares to get dark but unfortunately pulls out far too quickly – there are aspects that could have been further explored.
Magic Mike really is Tatum’s movie. Who would have thought that a film about stripping (which is very loosely based on him) would be the film that gets Hollywood to take him seriously? Not only does Tatum ooze sex appeal (it jumps off the screen! It has to be said that he is at his sexiest when fully clothed and showing off his moves!), but he also shows the doubters that he can act. He is now the triple threat – actor, dancer and HOT! This year he is proving that he is a leading man that will get people to the cinema (this is his 4th release of the year – The Vow, 21 Jump Street and Haywire).
Another actor who seems to be getting back on track is Matthew McConaughey. After a string of flops he is back making fun, entertaining movies, and for once, all that chest bearing is relevant and necessary! His portrayal of an over the top, flamboyant male stripper group boss is spot on – hilarious and dramatic to a tee!
Magic Mike is not just for the ladies. It is a fun, entertaining and engrossing film for all. For those who may be left feeling a little unfulfilled by the ending, don’t be too upset as there are already talks of a Magic Mike 2.
